New research from The Kobeissi Letter, drawing on Federal Reserve data, shows that total U.S. household net worth has ballooned from roughly $101 trillion in 2020 to approximately $185 trillion today. Yet that $84 trillion in newly created nominal wealth has flowed overwhelmingly to those who already owned appreciating assets, leaving households dependent on wages and cash savings increasingly behind.
The top 1% of U.S. households, about 1.4 million of the nation's 134.8 million households, now control more than $60 trillion in net worth. Since 2020 alone, their wealth has expanded by over $30 trillion. The bottom 50%, or 67.4 million households, collectively hold only about $4.3 trillion. That means the wealthiest 1% control roughly 14 times as much wealth as the entire bottom half of the country combined.
The concentration becomes even starker further up the ladder. The top 10% now command approximately 70% of all U.S. household net worth.
