Bitcoin BTC-USD is facing a sharp disconnect between institutional demand and price action, as nearly $1 billion poured into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs while the cryptocurrency remained pinned below $80,000. The divergence suggests large investors are still accumulating Bitcoin, but a more hawkish Federal Reserve and a major technical resistance level are preventing those flows from translating into another breakout.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $924 million in net inflows from August 24 through August 28, led overwhelmingly by BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust IBIT, which pulled in $938 million. Spot Ether ETFs added another $824 million, while BlackRock's ETHA extended its inflow streak to 10 consecutive trading sessions.

The momentum cracked on August 28, however, when Bitcoin funds suffered $201.81 million in combined outflows, ending nine straight sessions of positive flows. Even with that reversal, August became the strongest month of 2026 for spot crypto ETFs, attracting more than $3 billion in net new capital.

Bitcoin's problem is that institutional demand is running into a tougher macro backdrop. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole remarks reinforced concerns about persistent inflation and pushed traders to price in a greater chance of another rate increase. Bitcoin subsequently fell from roughly $79,500 to below $77,000.
