Malone Lam’s guilty plea advances one of the largest U.S. cryptocurrency-theft cases, but it does not reveal a flaw in Bitcoin. The more than 4,100 BTC at the center of the August 2024 theft were taken through social engineering: alleged conspirators impersonated trusted companies and persuaded a victim to surrender access information. At Bitcoin’s latest quoted price, that haul would be worth more than $314 million.

That distinction matters to investors. This is a warning about custody, identity verification and the cost of reimbursing fraud—not a new supply shock or a compromised blockchain. Bitcoin traded at $76,707.70 at 11:40 p.m. UTC on September 10, down about 2.0% from Yahoo Finance’s previous-close reference. There is no evidence that the plea caused that move.

What Lam admitted—and what he did not

Lam, 22, pleaded guilty on September 8 to one count of participating in a racketeering conspiracy, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia. Prosecutors put the enterprise’s theft and laundering total above $245 million and said it operated from no later than October 2023 through at least May 2025. A status hearing is set for December 8.

The case’s best-known transaction involved more than 4,100 BTC taken from a Washington, D.C., resident. Two alleged participants posed as representatives of Google and the Gemini exchange, then used cloud access and security codes obtained from the victim to move the coins, the Associated Press reported. Lam is the 11th of 18 defendants to plead guilty, according to that account.
