Bitcoin briefly crossed $70,000 on Coinbase Wednesday — the first time it’s traded that high since early June. The move wiped out more than a billion dollars in short positions within hours, but the trigger wasn’t a whale buy or a viral post. Here’s what actually drove the biggest single-day crypto rally in months, and why it matters even if you don’t hold any Bitcoin.

The Treasury Move That Lit the Fuse

While crypto traders celebrated the $70K candle, the real catalyst came from an unlikely place: the U.S. bond market. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent doubled its bond buyback operations from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation, targeting debt maturing in 10 to 30 years.

In simple terms, the government started buying back its own older bonds at a faster pace. That pushes bond prices up and yields — the return you’d earn for holding them — down. The 30-year yield, which had climbed to 5.34% (its highest since 2007), dropped 15 basis points to 5.19% almost immediately.

Why does that matter for Bitcoin? Lower long-term yields make safe investments less attractive compared to riskier assets. When yields drop, capital starts looking for better returns elsewhere — and crypto has consistently been one of the first places it flows. Jim Bianco of Bianco Research suggested the market was waiting for a “panic signal,” noting that bond traders stopped panicking once Bessent started acting.
