Coinbase has reversed one of its biggest consumer crypto rebrands. Just over a year after transforming Coinbase Wallet into the Base App, the company is bringing the Coinbase Wallet name back and refocusing the product around trading. Apparently, its ambitious “everything crypto app” experiment did not work as planned.

But Coinbase is not shutting the wallet down or abandoning Base. Instead, it is separating two platforms that became increasingly difficult to merge: Base as blockchain infrastructure and Coinbase Wallet as a self-custodial trading product.

What Happened to the Base App?

On September 10, Coinbase announced that the Base App is becoming Coinbase Wallet again.

The reversal comes about 14 months after Coinbase unveiled the Base App on July 16, 2025. At the time, the company described the change as much more than a new name.

Coinbase Wallet was supposed to evolve into an “everything app.” Trading remained part of the product, but Coinbase also added a decentralized social feed, creator monetization, encrypted messaging, mini-app discovery, payments, and onchain identity.

The idea was to make the wallet a consumer gateway to the entire Base ecosystem. However, the renamed Coinbase Wallet will now concentrate on self-custody, trading, and access to onchain markets across multiple networks.
