Crypto Hacks Hit $3.3B Despite 162 Fewer Incidents, Certik Reports

Blockchain security firm CertiK reports that cryptocurrency hackers stole $3.3 billion throughout 2025, even as the total number of attacks dropped significantly. The decline in incident counts signals improving protocol-level security, though losses remain concentrated in fewer, more sophisticated attacks.

Supply-chain breaches caused $1.45 billion in damages across just two incidents, including the $1.4 billion Bybit hack in February. CertiK stated that well-capitalized, coordinated threat actors are becoming more active across the ecosystem. The firm predicts rising sophistication in supply chain attacks as hackers increasingly target infrastructure providers.

Security incidents decreased by 162 counts year-over-year, indicating that #blockchain cybersecurity measures are strengthening. The average loss per hack reached $5.3 million, marking a 66% increase from the previous year.

The median loss fell to $103,966, down 35.75% over the same period. This metric, less influenced by outlier incidents, suggests that most individual attacks are becoming less profitable for hackers as basic security improves.

Phishing scams emerged as the second-largest threat, costing investors a cumulative $722 million across 248 incidents. An investor recently lost their entire $BTC retirement fund in an artificial intelligence-fueled romance scam, known as a pig butchering scam, where con artists used prolonged emotional manipulation.
