Defining a New Research Frontier on the “Search for Extraterrestrial Artificial Intelligence” (SETAI)

Avi Loeb has outlined a proposed research frontier called the Search for Extraterrestrial Artificial Intelligence, or SETAI. The concept focuses on investigating whether artificial intelligence could exist beyond Earth, extending the broader scientific search for extraterrestrial intelligence into questions shaped by advances in AI.

The proposal places AI at the center of how researchers might think about possible nonhuman technological civilizations. Rather than limiting inquiry to biological life or conventional communications, SETAI suggests that artificial systems could be a relevant subject for astronomical and technological searches.

SETAI would sit alongside the longstanding Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, commonly known as SETI. The framing reflects a growing interest in how rapid developments in artificial intelligence may affect scientific assumptions about intelligence, technology and the potential signatures of advanced civilizations elsewhere in the universe.
