WASHINGTON—The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced the release of Quantum Genesis Priority Applications (QGPAs), a set of eight key scientific utility problems that will guide the Quantum Genesis’s goal of developing fault-tolerant scientifically relevant quantum computers. This effort directly supports the goals outlined in President Trump’s Executive Order Ushering in the Next Frontier of Quantum Innovation and builds on the recommendations made in the Blueprint for DOE Quantum Supercomputing and the Office of Science Advisory Committee’s Quantum Report.

The QGPAs will serve as beacons for the quantum applications community, provide a concrete basis for judging the “scientific relevance” of fault-tolerant quantum computers, and coordinate the hardware, software, and domain science R&D needed to realize new scientific advances not otherwise possible today. These Priority Applications, along with the other elements of Quantum Genesis, will bring domain scientists from across disciplines into direct partnership with quantum researchers. Together, they will integrate quantum computing into real-world scientific workflows and benchmark performance against today’s most advanced supercomputing methods.
