The system will initially be used by EPB Quantum Computing Fellows to run algorithms aimed at optimizing the utility’s electric grid. The program is supported by a $4 million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology and includes eight graduate researchers working in quantum information science, physics and engineering.
Commercial access to EPB Quantum Computing is scheduled to begin in early October. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga will be the first customer, with Vanderbilt University also working with EPB on an initial project.
“Access to a quantum computer is rare and valuable,” said Janet Rehberg, CEO of EPB. “We’re starting with our own work to directly benefit our customers while also prioritizing the universities that are investing to expand quantum education, workforce development and research right here in Chattanooga.”
The installation builds on EPB’s Quantum Network, launched in 2023, and is part of a broader effort to establish Chattanooga as a center for commercial quantum research and development.
