  • IonQ said it unveiled the 256-qubit quantum computer Superion 256 and began taking orders.
  • The current 256-qubit level is unlikely to threaten Bitcoin security, and any attack would require far more advanced technology.
  • IonQ aims to develop Superion 10K and demonstrate fault-tolerant quantum computing technology in 2027.

U.S. quantum computing company IonQ has unveiled its 256-qubit quantum computer, the Superion 256, though analysts say current technology remains far from posing a threat to Bitcoin's security.

Decrypt reported on September 9 that IonQ introduced the Superion 256, equipped with a 256-qubit processor, and began taking orders. The company plans to start shipments in 2027.

The announcement comes amid growing concern over how advances in quantum computing could affect Bitcoin's cryptographic system. In theory, a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could derive a private key from an exposed public key and use it to steal another person's Bitcoin.

Still, the Superion 256 is not at a level that can undermine Bitcoin security anytime soon. A quantum computer's 256 qubits and Bitcoin's 256-bit security are different concepts, and the matching number does not mean the system can immediately break Bitcoin's cryptography.
