Germany’s Jülich research center and Japan’s RIKEN are expanding their partnership in high-performance computing and quantum computing, according to HPCwire. The collaboration links two major public research organizations with longstanding roles in advanced computing infrastructure and scientific research.

High-performance computing uses powerful systems to run large-scale simulations, data analysis and other computational workloads that cannot be handled efficiently on conventional machines. Quantum computing is an emerging field that uses quantum-mechanical effects for certain types of calculations and remains an active area of research worldwide.

The expanded relationship reflects the growing overlap between supercomputing and quantum research. Researchers and institutions are exploring how quantum technologies may eventually work alongside classical HPC systems, including through hybrid computing approaches and the development of tools, software and expertise needed for future scientific workloads.

International partnerships are increasingly important in these fields because advanced computing projects require specialized facilities, technical knowledge and long-term research coordination. Cooperation between Jülich and RIKEN could support knowledge exchange across HPC and quantum-computing research as both areas continue to develop.
