More Than 100 Crypto Projects Have Shutdown This Year: Report

More than 100 cryptocurrency projects have shutdown, filed for bankruptcy, or gone dark this year as prices for digital assets languish and cyberattacks increase.

A new report from crypto platform RootData says the number of crypto projects folding is accelerating with high-profile collapses such as BitMEX, BitMart, and Movement Labs.

The shutdowns involve the full gamut of the crypto industry, from exchanges and digital wallets to DeFi lending protocols, NFT marketplaces, and blockchain projects.

More From Cryptoprowl:

RootData likens the decline of crypto projects this year to the dotcom shakeout seen in the early 2000s amid a broad collapse in internet stocks.

The firm also argues that this latest pullback is different from crypto's last major shakeout in 2022, when fraud and interconnected leverage brought down Terra, Celsius, and FTX.

This time, there is no single point of contagion.

Rather, there is unwinding all of the optimism from when crypto-friendly U.S. President Donald Trump returned to office in early 2025.

Most of the projects now winding down were never generating revenue, notes RootData, adding that the slump in prices for digital assets such as Bitcoin (CRYPTO: $BTC) is pressuring companies.

Also problematic is the worst stretch of hacks and exploits on record for the crypto industry.

A Blockaid report estimates that $1.1 billion U.S. was lost to onchain attacks in the first six months of this year, more than all of 2025. Other firms put losses this year higher.

April 2026 was the most-hacked month in crypto history by number of attacks. Two attacks alone accounted for more than $500 million U.S. in financial losses, notes RootData.

The Kelp DAO and Drift Protocol hacks in April each cost more than $250 million U.S. in losses and are believed to have been carried out by North Korean hackers.

The rise in crypto exploits has not only raised security concerns but also shaken confidence in the market for digital assets, say analysts.

Bitcoin is trading at $64,800 U.S. early on Aug. 10.
