The launch of OpenAI's latest frontier algorithm is making waves on Wall Street and triggering a run in stocks that are tied to CEO Sam Altman's company. OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, a large language model (LLM) released last Thursday, is an improvement over previous OpenAI models, though it trails products from Meta Platforms and Anthropic, according to Artificial Analysis , which rates algorithm performance. In terms of raw power, Astra is equal to the model launched by OpenAI in July, but when put into a practical use environment, it has significant cost efficiency gains relative to a comparable LLM from rival Anthropic. "GPT-6 Astra equals [Anthropic's] Fable 5 at less than half the cost, driven by significant token efficiency gains," reviewers at Artificial Analysis wrote last Thursday. Enthusiasm on Wall Street about the new LLM is high and is spilling over into OpenAI's customers and suppliers, many of which are mutually invested with the company. "The launch of Astra shows OpenAI is so back … and its semis/hardware cohort can continue to rally," Ben Reitzes at Melius Research wrote Tuesday. "These include Arista , AMD , Broadcom most acutely as the sales estimates start to look more certain. The clouds that benefit most include Oracle , Microsoft and CoreWeave in that order." Investment bank Jefferies keeps a list of stocks most closely tied to OpenAI , and a selection of some of the biggest companies is outperforming the S & P 500 since Astra debuted last week. Japanese investment holding company Softbank, heavily invested in OpenAI, is up about 30% since the launch of Astra last week. The company had invested more than $64 billion in OpenAI as of February. OpenAI's supply chain spans chipmakers, networking companies, hardware producers, cloud platforms, and other sectors. Memory chips are a key beneficiary of the latest frontier LLMs due to increased workloads, according to Reitzes at Melius. Server DRAM "is where the agentic workload profile hits the hardest as the million-token context windows … live in KV cache (DRAM), as agents that hold a forty-minute task in context need to do it continuously, rather than for 4 seconds," Reitzes wrote Monday. He cited memory chipmaker Micron Technology as an "obvious beneficiary" along with South Korean rivals SK Hynix , whose stock debuted in the U.S. in July, and Samsung Electronics.
