SPRINGFIELD, Ga. (WTOC) - Students in Effingham County will receive free school meals for the upcoming school year thanks to a new multi-million dollar grant.

At Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting, OpenAI officially announced a $4.8 million commitment to cover all student breakfast and lunch costs across the Effingham County School District (ECSD) for the 2026/27 school year.

The funding is part of OpenAI’s Project Camellia Community Fund, designed to deliver direct economic support to local families at zero cost to taxpayers. The free meal program is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

“This generous commitment from OpenAI provides immediate, practical relief for our community,” ECSD Superintendent Dr. Ford said. “Providing meals for our students allows our families extra financial flexibility while ensuring our students are nourished and ready to learn every day.”

Since announcing Project Camellia, OpenAI representatives say they have met with local leaders and residents to determine how its $80 million community investment can best serve the area. School meal costs were quickly identified by county and school leaders as a practical way to provide immediate support to families at the start of the school year.
