Bitcoin is fully public by design, so anyone can trace payments between addresses, and privacy has been one of its most debated missing pieces for over a decade. What Is Shielded Bitcoin?

Shielded Bitcoin comes from [[alloc] init], a New York cryptography lab. Its researchers — Clara Shikhelman, Mikhail Komarov, and Aleksei Moskvin — released the full Shielded Bitcoin paper on September 24, the same day Shikhelman presented it to developers in New York.

The idea borrows from Zcash, a cryptocurrency built around “shielded” payments that hide transaction details. Zcash’s approach grew out of academic research from 2013 and launched in 2016. The twist here is that Shielded Bitcoin tries to bring that model to Bitcoin without asking Bitcoin to change.

That matters because changing Bitcoin is famously hard. A soft fork is an upgrade that tightens Bitcoin’s rules, and it needs broad agreement from users, developers, and miners. Proposals can take years or never happen at all.
