Jane Street appears to hold a bitcoin position worth about $990 million through spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Bitcoin Magazine reported on Aug. 17 that the position is equivalent to 15,394 BTC at current prices, but the holding is in ETF shares rather than spot bitcoin.

A disclosure filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) showed Jane Street allocated a total of $990 million across major spot bitcoin ETFs, including BlackRock's IBIT (iShares Bitcoin Trust), Fidelity's WBTC (Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund) and Grayscale's GBTC (Bitcoin Trust). Of that, $828 million was concentrated in BlackRock's product.

BlackRock's product remains the largest among spot bitcoin ETFs approved and launched in early 2024. The fund has attracted more money than other cryptocurrency ETFs, and its assets under management are tallied at $47.3 billion. Jane Street's position can be seen as forming on top of that flow of funds.

The disclosure again confirmed a trend of large financial firms increasing bitcoin exposure through regulated securities products. Major institutions are taking part in bitcoin price moves by buying ETF shares listed on exchanges. Pension funds and U.S. state governments have also added spot bitcoin ETFs alongside technology stocks and other U.S. equities.
