UK-headquartered hardware developer Universal Quantum has secured over $100 million in Series A funding, marking the largest Series A round raised by a UK quantum computing firm. The financing was co-led by deep-tech venture firm DCVC and quantum investor Firgun Ventures, with participation from EDBI (Singapore), Artal (advised by Invus), Integral GlobalTech (Japan), Main Sequence, Hostplus, NGS Super, IAG Capital, EdenBase, Eigenstate Holdings, SiteGround Capital, Nauta Capital, The Venture Collective, and Roblox founder Dave Baszucki. Lazard, Inc. served as exclusive financial advisor for the transaction.

Spun out of the University of Sussex, Universal Quantum’s engineering strategy focuses on eliminating major physical bottlenecks associated with trapped-ion scaling. Rather than relying on complex photonic interconnects or large laser arrays, the platform uses patented micro-electric field links (UQConnect) to physically shuttle trapped-ion qubits between silicon chiplets. Operable at a mild cryogenic temperature regime of approximately 70 Kelvin, the architecture bypasses sub-Kelvin dilution refrigerators, lowering thermal management complexity and facilitating modular multi-chip expansion.
