“Operadores whitehat” han movido 52.37 BTC a una dirección vinculada a un fideicomiso de recuperación recién formado, como parte de las consecuencias actuales del exploit del monedero de hardware Coldcard de julio, según el Jefe de Investigación de Galaxy Digital, Alex Thorn.

El hackeo del monedero de hardware de criptomonedas Coldcard comenzó el 30 de julio, con múltiples tandas (olas 1, 2 y 3) de ataques en los días subsiguientes que resultaron en pérdidas estimadas de más de $100 millones en bitcoin .

Los atacantes explotaron esto, haciendo que los monederos generaran semillas utilizando una fuente de números aleatorios basada en software más débil en lugar del generador de números aleatorios dedicado del monedero. Eso hizo que algunas semillas fueran vulnerables a la reconstrucción por parte de hackers.

Coinkite, el fabricante de Coldcard, ha parcheado desde entonces el firmware, aunque los fondos ya expuestos bajo las semillas antiguas siguen en riesgo independientemente del parche.

Según Thorn, algunas de las monedas movidas fuera de los monederos de las víctimas no fueron tomadas por actores maliciosos sino por whitehats, o profesionales éticos de la ciberseguridad que utilizan habilidades de hackeo para encontrar y solucionar debilidades de seguridad.

Estos llamados "buenos" barrieron los fondos específicamente para mantenerlos a salvo hasta que pudieran ser devueltos.
