Das lässt Betrugsopfern nur wenige Möglichkeiten, ihr Geld zurückzubekommen.

Lokale Beamte, die Verbote fordern, sagen, dass Bemühungen auf kommunaler Ebene nur Notlösungen für ein landesweites Problem sind, da Betrüger ihre Opfer einfach in eine nahe gelegene Stadt schicken können, die noch kein Verbot erlassen hat.

„Warum warten, bis (ein weiteres) Opfer auftaucht, bevor wir das Richtige tun“, sagte Keith Sonia, Stadtrat von Beverly, der sich für ein Verbot in seiner Gemeinde eingesetzt hat.

Laut einer Zählung der AARP, die sich landesweit für Verbote eingesetzt hat, haben mindestens 35 Bundesstaaten Gesetze zur Regulierung der Automaten erlassen, und fünf haben sie gänzlich verboten. Jeder Bundesstaat in Neuengland außer Massachusetts hat sie reguliert, und Vermont hat im letzten Monat ein vollständiges Verbot eingeführt.

Innerhalb von Massachusetts umfassen kommunale Verbote mittlerweile Ipswich und Gloucester an der North Shore, Revere außerhalb von Boston bis hin zu Westfield und Longmeadow im westlichen Teil des Bundesstaates.
