Most privacy teams in private capital have already done the hard part. They built the privacy program and mapped where the personal data sits. The artificial intelligence policy came next, setting out the expected principles on human oversight and accountability. A while later an agent does its work, and a question lands that the policy cannot answer.

A partner forwards an investment committee memo and asks whether anyone checked the figure the model produced. Or a limited partner questionnaire turns up wanting to know which AI systems touch the investment process and who signs off on what they produce. Or a regulator, mid-examination, asks how the firm actually reached a decision.
Strip each one down and the same narrow question is underneath. Did a named person own the decision and is there a record of it?
The policy on the shelf does not settle that.
The gap a policy does not close
Privacy professionals already know this gap, under another name. The field has spent years grappling with the accountability gap, the distance between a principle and a practice, between a clean statement of purpose limitation and an actual record that shows it happening.
AI governance reached the same spot much faster. A policy can demand human oversight on every page and still leave open who that human is and where in the workflow they sit. It usually skips what they are actually supposed to check.
Agentic tools widen the gap because they choose what to do within a defined scope. Controls written for ordinary software assume the system does as it is told. Agentic AI tools do not.
