Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan and co-investors back an entity that owns a 49% stake in the holding company expected to house World Liberty Financial’s banking venture, according to The Wall Street Journal, which cited people familiar with the matter.
Tahnoon, the United Arab Emirates’ national security adviser and brother of UAE President Sheik Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has emerged as one of the most powerful investors in the Gulf.
The Journal previously reported that Tahnoon backed a $500 million investment in World Liberty Financial, securing a 49% stake in the cryptocurrency company.
World Liberty Moves Into Banking
The reported investment comes as World Liberty Financial advances plans to establish a federally chartered trust bank in the United States.
Earlier in August, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency granted preliminary conditional approval for a national trust bank charter connected to World Liberty Financial.
