Coinbase just revealed that its x402 payment protocol has processed over 165 million transactions worth $50 million — and virtually none of those payments came from humans. Here’s what’s happening, why stablecoins are winning this race, and why the hardest problem isn’t the technology.

What AI Agents Are Actually Buying

Let’s clear up a common misconception first. These AI agents aren’t trading Bitcoin or speculating on memecoins. They’re doing something far more mundane — and, frankly, more useful.

The 480,000+ agents using Coinbase’s x402 system are buying API access, cloud computing time, datasets, and digital tools. The average transaction? About 30 cents. Lincoln Murr, Coinbase’s head of AI product, told CoinDesk that “the primary product-market fit today is machine-to-machine payments from agents to APIs.”

Think of it this way: when an AI assistant needs a weather forecast, a stock price, or a language translation, it calls an API. That call costs a fraction of a cent. Multiply that by millions of calls per day, and you’ve got a payment problem that credit cards were never designed to solve. Traditional card processing charges 2–4% per transaction — which makes zero economic sense for a $0.001 API call.
