Bitcoin's recovery above $80,000 has reignited a familiar debate over whether the world's largest cryptocurrency is staging a durable comeback or merely enjoying another temporary bounce. The question drew sharp responses from two of the asset's most prominent institutional backers after a well-known venture capitalist dismissed the rally as a "dead cat bounce."

The dispute centers on the fundamental value proposition of an asset that has now traded for 17 years. Michael Saylor, executive chairman of Strategy (MSTR), and Cathie Wood, founder of ARK Invest, both rejected the characterization from investor Jason Calacanis, who posted a chart showing Bitcoin's roughly 31% annual decline and declared that "the dead cat is still bouncing."

Calacanis argued that Bitcoin has failed to find meaningful use cases in transactions, smart contracts, or everyday payments, likening it to a laserdisc in the streaming era. Saylor countered that the asset's roughly $1.6 trillion valuation represents something more significant: digital capital designed to preserve wealth across generations.

"Digital capital is the killer app," Saylor said, adding that passing wealth to future generations matters more than appealing to dinner-table guests. He reiterated his longstanding commitment with the phrase "the orange tie stays on."
