  • Bitcoin BTCUSD traded around $77,000 Monday after surging more than 23% last week, its strongest weekly performance in roughly two-and-a-half years.
  • The OG crypto briefly reached $79,500, leaving the psychologically important $80,000 level close enough for traders to start making confident predictions again.
  • The move accelerated after the US Treasury doubled planned buybacks of long-dated government bonds to at least $4 billion per operation.
  • Traders interpreted the intervention as potentially weakening the dollar over time, reviving the “debasement trade” — buying scarce assets to protect purchasing power.
  • Gold rallied alongside Bitcoin, making this more than another crypto-only burst of enthusiasm. Both assets benefited as US debt exceeded $40 trillion and confidence in government bonds weakened.

💰 Institutional money returns

  • US spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted more than $1.6 billion from Monday through Thursday, including $606 million on Thursday alone — the strongest daily inflow since May.
  • Spot ETFs own Bitcoin directly, giving traditional investors exposure without asking them to remember where they hid a seed phrase.
  • The rally also liquidated more than $4.3 billion of bearish positions. Liquidation occurs when exchanges automatically close leveraged trades that lack sufficient collateral. Those forced purchases accelerated the climb, meaning part of the rally came from bears urgently buying Bitcoin they previously expected to fall.
  • Washington supplied another catalyst. President Trump urged Congress to advance the Clarity Act, which would establish when digital assets are treated as securities or commodities and divide oversight between the SEC and CFTC.
