A closely followed measure of cryptocurrency demand has reached "greed" levels and is trading at its highest peak since before the market for digital assets crashed last October.

The "Crypto Fear & Greed Index" managed by software provider Alternative.me has reached a reading of 74, up from 27 on Aug. 12.

The index spent every day from late July through Aug. 19 in "fear" territory, falling as low as 25 on Aug. 6, which is classified as an "extreme fear" level.

The gauge assesses market mood on a scale of 0 to 100 by blending Bitcoin's (CRYPTO: $BTC) volatility and trading momentum with social media activity and online search activity.

Any reading above 50 is considered to be in greed territory.

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index was last this high on Oct. 5, 2025, five days before a crash forced $19 billion U.S. of liquidations in leveraged positions, the largest such event on record.

The shift in investor sentiment comes with big gains seen across the crypto market.

Bitcoin has climbed from below $65,000 U.S. last week to above $80,000 U.S. in recent days. BTC is trading at $78,400 U.S. on Aug. 26.

The next test for the crypto market is likely to come on Aug. 28 when U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivers his first Jackson Hole keynote address.

Markets are looking for clues on interest rates and inflation after weeks of volatility in long-term Treasury bonds.

Bitcoin peaked at just over $126,000 U.S. in early October of last year before falling to a low of $58,000 U.S. at the end of June this year.
