The cryptocurrency market's persistent volatility stems from a fundamental mismatch between what investors expect blockchain technology to accomplish and what it actually delivers today, according to Dom Kwok, co-founder of the blockchain developer platform EasyA.

Kwok's analysis arrives as Bitcoin trades near $83,000 following a turbulent week that saw the leading cryptocurrency plunge to a multi-week low of $80,400 before staging a partial recovery. The broader market shed roughly $200 billion in value during the selloff, with total crypto market capitalization now hovering around $2.8 trillion, according to CoinMarketCap data.

The disconnect between price action and industry progress has become a defining feature of the current cycle, Kwok argued in a series of posts on X. "Why are prices down despite so much bullish news?" he wrote, framing what he called "the most misunderstood concept in crypto right now."

His answer: the market does not trade on present-day technology. It trades on what participants hope that technology will eventually achieve.

The Dot-Com Parallel

Kwok drew a direct comparison between today's crypto landscape and the late-1990s internet boom, when companies with unproven business models commanded valuations that far outpaced their actual revenue generation. When sentiment shifted, the consequences were severe.
