Dunamu, the operator of South Korea’s largest cryptocurrency exchange Upbit, reported a sharp decline in first-half earnings, with operating profit falling 81% year-on-year to 106.8 billion won ($77.9 million). The company’s operating revenue also dropped 50.9% to 386.3 billion won ($282.0 million), according to a report from Financial News.
Market Context and Decline Drivers
The significant downturn in Dunamu’s earnings reflects broader challenges in the cryptocurrency market. Trading volumes on Upbit, which has historically dominated South Korea’s digital asset market, have been subdued compared to the previous year’s bull run. The first half of 2024 saw a surge in trading activity, driven by retail investor enthusiasm and favorable market conditions. In contrast, the first half of 2025 has been marked by lower volatility and reduced participation, leading to a contraction in transaction fees—the primary revenue source for exchanges.
Industry analysts point to several factors, including global regulatory uncertainty, a decline in speculative interest, and a shift in investor attention to other asset classes. South Korea’s stringent regulatory environment, which requires real-name verification and has previously imposed strict rules on exchanges, continues to shape the market’s structure.
Financial Breakdown and Comparative Analysis
Dunamu’s net profit figures were not disclosed in the initial report, but the operating profit margin has compressed significantly. In the first half of 2024, the company recorded an operating profit of approximately 561 billion won, highlighting the extent of the current decline. Revenue of 386.3 billion won is a notable drop from the 786 billion won generated in the same period last year.
