Ethereum delivered a standout performance in the third quarter, with its native token surging 70% and handily outpacing bitcoin's 42% advance. But that headline number concealed an uncomfortable development underneath: the market for ether actually became harder to trade. Liquidity, measured by the depth of buy and sell orders sitting on exchanges, thinned out considerably relative to bitcoin. According to a report by CoinGecko, ether's median daily market depth between July 6 and September 30 was just 35% to 45% of bitcoin's. A year earlier, the same metric stood at a minimum of 60%. The research firm described the change as a stark drop from last year's figures.

Market depth is the standard gauge of liquidity in digital assets. It represents the total dollar value of resting orders within a set distance of the current price. A deeper market means more capital is required to shift the price; a thinner one means a large order can quickly chew through available liquidity and trigger outsized moves. The data undercuts a widely held assumption in crypto markets that rising prices naturally attract more participants and therefore deepen order books. That dynamic did not play out for ether this quarter.
