NEED TO KNOW

  • Alisa Goods, 63, went missing in Las Vegas after leaving a friend's apartment to visit a nearby CVS to purchase iron pills

  • She was last seen on Aug. 8, and the friend she was staying with reported her missing on Aug. 10

  • Goods' family says they have received cryptic texts from her phone asking for gas money and bitcoin, raising fears of foul play

More than a week after a 63-year-old woman from New York went missing in Las Vegas, her family says they began receiving a series of mysterious text messages.

Alisa Goods, a grandmother of five, was reported missing on Aug. 10, CBS News and WABC reported. Goods, 63, was visiting a friend in Las Vegas and staying at his apartment. The friend reportedly told authorities he last saw her on Aug. 8, when she left the apartment to take a bus to a nearby CVS.

By Aug. 12, Goods' family members say that they began receiving text messages from her phone asking for "help, gas money and bitcoin," according to the outlet, which cited the family.

Goods' niece Alana Calloway said that she began to fear her aunt was kidnapped after she received a text asking for gas money, as Goods does not drive.

Goods' daughter Kristen Goods said she also worries for her mother's safety.

"I am hoping to God for the best, but my heart can't take what it could be, which is the worst," Kristen told CBS News.

Goods' friend, Roger John, lived in an apartment near S. Maryland Parkway and Tropicana Avenue, according to local outlet KLAS. She allegedly told John she was heading to the CVS located on Paradise Road and Harmon Avenue to purchase iron pills.

"It's just sad because she's the nicest person you would meet," John told KLAS of his missing friend, who he said he has known Goods for nine years.

Goods' son, Keven Newton, also reported receiving strange messages from her phone.

"Just give my mother back," Newton told the outlet. "I don't know what y'all got going on, but this ain't it."

Calloway described Goods as a "superstar" in an interview with KLAS.

"People gravitate towards her," Calloway told the outlet. "She lights up any room she walks in. They love her," Calloway said. "She has such a welcoming and warm personality and just filled with so much love."

PEOPLE has reached out to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, which is investigating the missing persons case.
