Nach Jahren, in denen sie Wind- und Solarprojekte aufgekauft haben, setzen Hyperscaler wie Amazon, Google, Meta und Microsoft darauf, dass Erdgas die Rechenzentren hinter ihren hochgesteckten KI-Ambitionen antreiben wird. Doch ein neuer Forschungsbericht legt nahe, dass sie ihre neu entdeckte Affinität zu dem fossilen Brennstoff bereuen könnten.

Die Erdgaspreise könnten sich in einigen Teilen der USA in den kommenden Jahren verdreifachen, da die Nachfrage der Hyperscaler mit sinkendem Angebotswachstum und steigenden Exporten von Flüssigerdgas kollidiert, so die Energieforschungsfirma Noreva. Hyperscaler sind möglicherweise nicht auf künftige Preisschocks vorbereitet.

„Ich glaube, jeder auf den Energiemärkten wurde in dem Gefühl gewiegt, dass die Gaspreise nicht steigen können“, sagte Peter Gardett, CEO von Noreva, gegenüber TechCrunch. „Man braucht nur einfache Arithmetik, um zu einem viel angespannteren Gasmarkt zu gelangen als noch vor wenigen Jahren.“

Die großen Wetten der Hyperscaler

Günstiges Gas hat Hyperscaler dazu bewogen, sich Teile des Marktes zu sichern. Im März erklärte Meta, ein massives 7,5-Gigawatt-Erdgaskraftwerk in Louisiana zu bauen, um sein Hyperion-Rechenzentrum mit Strom zu versorgen. Wenige Tage später erklärten Microsoft und Google jeweils, eigene Gaskraftwerke im Gigawatt-Maßstab in Texas zu bauen. Und um nicht den Anschluss zu verlieren, plant Amazon den Bau eines 7,6-Gigawatt-Gaskraftwerks in Texas.
