IonQ IONQ shares surged 11% in early trading Wednesday after the quantum-computing company announced what it called a major breakthrough in real-time error correction, tackling one of the biggest technical obstacles standing between today's experimental systems and practical fault-tolerant quantum computers.

IonQ develops quantum computers using trapped-ion technology and provides access to its systems through major cloud platforms. The company is trying to move quantum computing beyond research experiments toward machines capable of solving commercially useful problems reliably.

The latest development targets a fundamental weakness in quantum computing: errors.

Qubits are extremely sensitive to environmental noise, meaning useful quantum computers must continuously detect and correct errors without disrupting calculations. Doing that quickly enough in real time has historically required significant computing resources.

IonQ said its researchers successfully developed and tested “the industry's first end-to-end real-time quantum error correction decoder that runs on a single standard off-the-shelf central processing unit.”

That last piece is potentially important.

Running the decoder on a conventional CPU suggests error-correction processing may not require highly specialized external computing hardware, potentially simplifying how fault-tolerant systems are eventually built and scaled.
