For the first time in its corporate history, IREN is no longer primarily a crypto miner. The company's fourth-quarter results delivered the long-promised inflection point: AI cloud revenue now accounts for 51.4 percent of total sales, edging past the Bitcoin mining business that built the firm. Yet the milestone arrived wrapped in a $684 million net loss and a revenue miss that sent shares tumbling — a reminder that transformation, however strategically sound, rarely comes cheap.

The market's reaction was swift and unforgiving. IREN shares fell 12 percent on Friday and 14 percent over the trailing seven-day stretch, leaving the stock 55 percent below its 52-week high of €68.61 set in early November. The sell-off wasn't isolated: CoreWeave dropped 6.8 percent on Wednesday, Nebius Group shed 5.2 percent, and TeraWulf fell 6.5 percent. When the entire "neocloud" complex wobbles, the most indebted names tend to wobble hardest.

A Loss That Tells a Story of Transition

The headline numbers look grim at first glance. IREN posted a net loss of $684 million for the fourth quarter, with the bulk stemming from a $638.8 million impairment charge on older mining hardware. The secondary source pegs that write-down at $450.4 million — either way, the message is identical: the company is clearing the decks of its legacy Bitcoin equipment to make room for the AI infrastructure business it believes will define its future.
