Victims first receive an unexpected pop-up notification on their Apple device claiming that unauthorised access attempts have been made on their account, or prompting them to change their Apple ID password. This is followed by an unsolicited call from scammers posing as Apple technical support representatives, typically bearing a “+1” North American country code.
The callers inform victims that their Apple or email account has been compromised and direct them to fraudulent websites, including “chat-apple.com” and “case-apple.com”, where they are instructed to provide sensitive information including their Apple ID credentials, cryptocurrency account credentials, and One-Time Passwords.
Armed with the compromised credentials and OTPs, scammers access victims’ cryptocurrency accounts or linked wallets and swiftly transfer out the assets. Victims typically discover the theft only when they notice unauthorised cryptocurrency transactions on their accounts.
