James Howells, an IT worker from Newport, Wales, mistakenly discarded a hard drive containing the private keys to a wallet holding an estimated 7,500 to 8,000 bitcoin, believing he was throwing away an empty, unneeded drive during a routine cleanout, and the drive was taken to a local landfill along with the rest of that day's household waste.

The coins are now valued at approximately $578 million, and Howells has spent years attempting to gain permission to excavate the specific landfill site in search of the drive, a legal and logistical effort complicated by environmental regulations, landfill safety concerns, and the sheer scale of searching through years of accumulated waste for a single small object.

Howells's case has become one of the most widely cited examples of this specific kind of crypto loss precisely because the mistake itself, accidentally throwing away the wrong item during a cleanout, is such an ordinary, universally relatable error, magnified into a historic loss only because of what the discarded item happened to contain.
