Talks among Anthropic, Google $GOOGL, and OpenAI about establishing an AI industry standards body are continuing, CNN reported, and sources say they are proceeding regardless of whether the Trump administration participates.
A July essay by Google DeepMind founder Demis Hassabis served as the spark for those conversations, CNN reported; in it, Hassabis outlined a case for a U.S.-led standards body patterned after the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. Under his vision, the organization would evaluate powerful AI models prior to their release to the public. Hassabis envisioned it operating as a hybrid public-private entity, with government oversight, corporate funding, and a staff drawn from independent technical experts and the open-source community.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was separately considering a similar independent regulatory agency for AI that would report to the Securities and Exchange Commission, according to Bloomberg.
Opposition exists within the industry. According to CNN, Zuckerberg used a phone call with Trump this summer to argue against establishing a national AI regulator, calling the concept fundamentally flawed.
