Better Buy: XRP vs. Bitcoin

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) and XRP (CRYPTO: XRP) are two of the largest and oldest cryptocurrencies on the planet. Bitcoin has been around since 2009 and sports a total market value of $1.55 trillion on Sept. 1, 2026. The XRP Ledger launched in 2012, and the coin's market cap is $85.1 billion today.

Both coins have ardent fans and longtime "diamond hands" investors. Bitcoin serves as a nationless currency with minimal inflation. XRP was built to transfer money across international borders. But which one is the better buy right now?

Start with the three-year tape

Forget the narratives for a second and just read the chart. Over the past three years, Bitcoin roughly tripled. XRP gained roughly 170% over the same period.

So the three-year results are in the same ballpark, but the routes they traveled here are quite different. XRP had the wilder ride, the better story, and the louder fanbase, and it's still in second place.

Bitcoin's $1.55 trillion is roughly 18 times XRP's $85.1 billion. That ratio has stayed fairly stable through a period when XRP had every regulatory tailwind it could have asked for.
