Cryptocurrency ownership in Brazil has surged past traditional stock market participation, with new survey data showing that digital asset investors outnumber equity investors by a factor of 2.7. The findings, released by Brazilian research firms Paradigma and Datafolha, highlight a significant shift in how the country’s population approaches investing.

According to the survey of 2,004 people, 17.2% of respondents said they had invested in cryptocurrencies, compared to just 6.4% who held stocks. This translates to an estimated 29 million crypto investors in Brazil, a figure that underscores the growing mainstream acceptance of digital assets in one of Latin America’s largest economies.

How Crypto Fits Into Brazil’s Investment Landscape

When ranked among all investment vehicles, cryptocurrency placed fifth in popularity, behind savings accounts, real estate, cash holdings, and investment funds. It notably outperformed more traditional options such as time deposits at banks (15.1%), foreign currencies (14%), and gold (9.8%).

The survey, conducted across 137 Brazilian municipalities from May 11 to May 14, also revealed that the majority of crypto investors are not using dedicated exchanges. Instead, 83% of respondents said they bought or held crypto through banking apps, while only 26% used self-custody wallets and 20% used exchanges. This suggests that Brazil’s financial institutions have played a crucial role in driving adoption by integrating crypto services directly into their platforms.
