Crypto bets on AI agents as new users after human slowdown

Crypto bets on AI agents as new users after human slowdown

Crypto firms are increasingly positioning AI agents as potential users of blockchain networks and financial services as growth in human adoption slows. The trend centers on enabling autonomous software to hold wallets, make payments and interact with decentralized applications.

Puntos Clave

  • 01 AI agents are being viewed as a new source of crypto network activity.
  • 02 Potential use cases include autonomous wallets, payments and onchain transactions.
  • 03 The shift reflects concern that growth in human crypto users may be slowing.

The New Customer Is Software

Crypto spent a decade trying to win over humans. Now it is pitching to software.

The pitch makes sense once you see the problem. AI agents need wallets, payment networks, and ways to move money with no human in the middle, and crypto has all of those.

After years of marketing itself as better money and faster payments, the industry is finally finding a customer that does not need convincing. That customer is a machine.

The shift showed up in real products this year. Kraken said this summer it is redesigning its app so users can connect AI agents that watch markets, spot opportunities, and execute trades instantly.

Coinbase introduced a tool that lets assistants like ChatGPT or Claude make crypto trades from simple, plain-language instructions. Circle said in May it is expanding around its own Arc blockchain, built as infrastructure for an economy in which AI agents take over operations and contract work now done by people.

Stablecoins Are the Payments Rail

Stablecoins sit at the center because they solve a basic problem: they hold a fixed value, can be built into software, and run around the clock. That gives an AI agent a payment channel that never sleeps and never waits for a bank.

"Conventional banking systems are really poorly suited to realtime agent-to-agent, machine-to-machine commerce," said Joseph Chalom, chief executive at Sharplink, which manages ether-focused treasury operations.

AI agents are still early in their current form, but the building blocks are already being put in place: wallets made for software, stablecoins that settle around the clock, and exchange tools that let programs trade. That is the foundation of what Circle and others describe as an economy where machines handle jobs previously done by people.

Circle markets USDC as programmable digital dollars for internet payments. Its CEO, Jeremy Allaire, says more activity on its Arc network should increase USDC supply, transaction volume, and monetization.

He also says banks can build tokenized deposits on top of Arc and move them with USDC.

A Bear Market Is the Backdrop

This push is happening during a rough stretch for crypto.

At the same time, large-scale institutional adoption has dampened bitcoin's swings in both directions. Kraken's chief data officer, Kamo Asatryan, put it bluntly: "The fun casino days of bitcoin are over."

He expects volatility to become less jagged as financial utility grows, even though it will never disappear. Exchanges are also moving beyond trading into broader financial infrastructure, including equities, commodities, payments, banking, and lending.

Gemini's president, Cameron Winklevoss, says agentic trading lowers the barrier for everyday users to use sophisticated strategies. Kraken is betting the same, aiming its agentic trading experience at everyday users as well as institutions, trading firms, and professional traders.

What It Means for Your Money

If AI agents really become a user base, crypto stops depending so much on hype and human emotion. Trading would be driven by software doing actual work, which could mean calmer prices and more practical uses.

But the projected demand might not show up. Agentic trading could just be a sign of an industry maturing away from its early unregulated image.

Either way, the tools are arriving now. Lincoln Murr, Coinbase's AI product lead, said, "The whole idea is to give agents access to money, and through that, expand what they can do on the internet."

For investors, this is the story to watch over the next few years. If the AI-agent bet works, crypto becomes less of a casino and more of a utility, and that would change how it behaves in any portfolio that holds it.
