DefiLlama, a cryptocurrency data platform, delayed the launch of its mobile app for months because of phishing apps impersonating the company, Cointelegraph reported.

Cointelegraph reported on Aug. 16 that DefiLlama co-founder 0xngmi wrote on X that the company waited to release its app until all fake apps had been removed to prevent harm to users.

He said he spent months asking Apple to remove one malicious app but received no response. Apple removed the app within days only after the team downloaded it, documented how small wallets were drained and submitted that evidence, he added.

Fake apps impersonating major crypto brands have appeared in Apple's App Store before. In 2024, apps posing as Rabby Wallet and Curve Finance were listed on the store. In November 2023, a fake Ledger Live app listed on the Microsoft Store stole $588,000 in assets across 38 transactions.

Cointelegraph said it had asked Apple for comment and was awaiting a response.
