The crypto industry is trying to defeat former Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) for the second time in two years — a significant intervention in a race that could help determine whether Democrats control the Senate after 2026.
Crypto’s top legislative priority, the Clarity Act, went down in flames last week, and much of the sector is keen to blame Democrats. A large number of Republicans also had real qualms about the bill.
Some Democrats see Fairshake’s $30 million buy against Brown as an act of war from the super PAC network, which has $120 million cash on hand at last count.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) has tried to convince her colleagues for months that crypto doesn’t have the juice. The Massachusetts progressive told reporters on Tuesday night that crypto’s spending blitz was an opportunity for Democrats to capitalize on voter angst about corruption and powerful interests.
“People across this country are sick of a handful of billionaires who think they can buy every election. The 2026 midterms will put that issue squarely on the table,” Warren said. “Do you want someone to represent whatever the billionaires and Donald Trump wants? Or do you want someone to represent you?”
