- New standard. Sierra and Meta are developing the Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard for how consumers' personal AI agents interact with businesses. Sierra names Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe and Walmart as partners, and Meta's list also includes NiCE and Decagon.
- Contact center stakes. Sierra says personal agents that stall on a website fall back to calling the support line or opening web chat. Those are the channels Genesys and NiCE run.
- Spec still pending. Sierra plans to publish a v0.1 specification later in October, followed by design workshops and a reference implementation.
Sierra and Meta on Oct. 6 announced the Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard that defines how consumers' personal AI agents sign in, identify themselves and complete tasks with businesses. Contact center software rivals Genesys and NiCE both signed on.
The announcement lands a month after Meta launched Muse, its personal AI agent. Muse can shop, book travel and negotiate bills on a user's behalf. Every one of those tasks eventually touches a brand's customer service operation.
What the Personal Agent Protocol Does
Sierra co-founders Bret Taylor and Clay Bavor laid out the design in a company blog post. "The principle behind the Personal Agent Protocol we're building is that consumers decide what access to give their personal agents, and companies set parameters for what those agents can do," they wrote.
