When Sadyr Japarov took office as president of Kyrgyzstan six years ago, he said it would be his first and only term. Now he wants another. The convicted hostage-taker turned populist politician announced in mid-August that he would seek reelection, saying the country’s economic transformation remains at the top of his agenda. Few things have been more critical to that drive than Kyrgyzstan’s unlikely ascent in the global cryptocurrency economy.

During Japarov’s first term, the value of transactions handled by Kyrgyzstan’s licensed crypto firms increased more than 500-fold, from about $60 million in 2022 to roughly $30 billion in 2025, according to government estimates. Last year, the blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis ranked Kyrgyzstan 19th worldwide for cryptocurrency adoption, adjusted for population. The crypto surge has continued this year: During the first half of 2026, transaction volume was about 2.7 times higher than during the same period in 2025.

The boom has earned the country a new nickname: “Cryptostan.” It has also created a two-track problem that Japarov cannot easily wish away: Russian connections and Western sanctions.

Why this matters

Kyrgyzstan has become a sizable crypto-transaction hub, making its exposure to Russian connections and Western sanctions relevant beyond its domestic market. The combination could increase compliance scrutiny of firms using the country’s licensed crypto sector and signals potential sanctions-evasion risks for counterparties.
