ALBUQUERQUE – The State of New Mexico and the City of Albuquerque are backing the expansion of Quantinuum, a leading quantum computing company, further establishing Albuquerque as a national hub in quantum technology and advanced research.

The city and state will each contribute $750,000 through their Local Economic Development Act (LEDA) funds for a combined investment of $1.5 million to support Quantinuum’s new research and development hub in Albuquerque.

Quantinuum develops quantum computers and the software needed to operate them. Its technology could eventually transform industries like healthcare, finance and AI by making breakthroughs that aren’t possible with today’s computing power.

Last year, the company, which has its corporate headquarters in Broomfield, Colorado, established its footprint in Albuquerque after securing a 6,000-square-foot facility near Balloon Fiesta Park. Now, Quantinuum is ready to expand its New Mexico operations even further with plans to create dozens of careers for highly skilled individuals that the city and state estimate could generate substantial economic impact over the next decade.

“New Mexico is proving that the future of quantum technology will be built right here in the Land of Enchantment,” said Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. “Quantinuum’s expansion reflects the momentum we’ve created by investing in world-class research, growing our innovation economy and creating high-paying careers that will keep New Mexico at the forefront of one of the world’s most transformative industries.”

“New Mexico offers a rich ecosystem that is not only valuable for Quantinuum to advance its own quantum computing technology but also to help bolster U.S. competitiveness in quantum computing on a global scale” said Dr. Jennifer Strabley, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of the Compute Platforms Group at Quantinuum. “Integrated photonics R&D is a critical part of our technology roadmap and we’re building out this crucial capability right here in Albuquerque.”

New Mexico is rapidly establishing itself as a national quantum technology hub with investments of over $450 million in research, startup infrastructure, and partnerships with leading organizations like DARPA, Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and private industry. By building dedicated facilities, supporting quantum startups, and expanding its skilled workforce, both the State and the City of Albuquerque are working to ensure that groundbreaking quantum innovations are developed, commercialized, and sustained in New Mexico.

“Quantinuum’s decision to expand here is another clear signal that New Mexico has become the Next Frontier for the companies that will define the future.” said Economic Development New Mexico Secretary Rob Black, “We’re building an ecosystem where groundbreaking technologies can move from the lab to the marketplace while creating lasting economic opportunity for New Mexicans.”

The new facility will support ongoing research and development in integrated photonics, a critical technology for the next-generation of Quantinuum’s trapped-ion quantum computing platform. The company will continue working with New Mexico’s national laboratories and research institutions to advance next-generation quantum technologies while growing the region’s innovation ecosystem.

“We continue to stand out as one of the best places in the nation for up-and-coming tech,” said Mayor Tim Keller. “This investment will bring rewarding careers, strengthen our leadership in quantum science, and attract and retain world-class talent.”

“Quantinuum’s expansion is another milestone for Albuquerque’s growing quantum scene,” said Economic Development Director Max Gruner. “Our unique mix of national labs, universities, and a highly skilled workforce continues to attract firms developing transformative technologies. Quantinuum’s investment further establishes Albuquerque as one of the nation’s top spots for quantum innovation.”

The new facility will be located at 5501 Wilshire in Albuquerque. Quantinuum will transform the previously vacant building into a cutting-edge space with advanced laboratories and offices, reviving an underused property while expanding Albuquerque’s quantum technology presence.
