Developer Oleg Fomenko has released frost-wallet, an open-source threshold Schnorr wallet for Bitcoin that runs entirely offline.
The whole thing lives inside a single, self-contained HTML file. No server, no network connection, no cloud account quietly phoning home.
Frost-wallet supports what cryptographers call t-of-n setups. A group of n participants each holds a share, and any t of them can cooperate to sign a transaction.
No single person ever holds the complete private key. Lose one share, or have one stolen, and the funds remain safe as long as the threshold isn't met.
Fomenko, who publishes on GitHub as olegfomenko, built the wallet in Rust. The Rust code is compiled to WebAssembly and paired with JavaScript, which is how the entire application fits into one browser-readable file.
Participants and a coordinator pass messages back and forth through QR codes, plain text, or files. Every step of key creation and signing can happen on air-gapped machines, which means the devices are physically cut off from any network.
The first building block is ChillDKG, a draft Bitcoin Improvement Proposal developed by Blockstream Research. DKG stands for distributed key generation, a method for creating key shares so that the full key is never assembled in one place, not even at the start.
