Poll shows 81% of Coloradans ages 18-44 dislike artificial intelligence

DENVER | Two-thirds of Coloradans have an unfavorable opinion of artificial intelligence, with younger people the most strongly opposed to it, as global AI leaders call for a development slowdown and push for safety controls.

A newly-released survey found that 81% of people between 18 and 44 years old do not like AI, compared to 55% of people between 45 and 64 years old and 49% of people over the age of 65. Sixty percent said they had used AI tools in the previous year.

The survey was released over the weekend by Magellan Strategies, a nonpartisan research firm based in Broomfield. It was not paid for or developed by an outside organization, and the survey was conducted with nearly 1,400 registered voters between Aug. 26 and Sept. 2. The margin of error is 2.63%.

Women are more unfavorable toward the technology, with 74% holding that attitude compared to 58% of men. Republicans are more friendly toward AI, with 48% saying they have a favorable view versus 25% of unaffiliated voters and 20% of Democrats. And favorability towards AI increases with income, landing at nearly an even split among people who make at least $200,000 per year.
