Crypto execs warn Q-day may look like ordinary wallet breaches, with Tether's minting key flagged as a prime target and timelines ranging from 2028 to the early 2030s.
Industry executives are raising a scenario that would make quantum computing threats harder to track than previously assumed: the first successful attack may leave almost no forensic trail at all.
Christopher Smith, CEO and co-founder of blockchain startup Quantus Network, said a powerful enough quantum computer could extract a private key from a public key exposed on-chain. That would allow an attacker to drain a wallet without ever breaching a device, exchange, or internal system. "When someone cracks your key, you don't get a memo saying how they did it," Smith told Cointelegraph.
Tether's Minting Key Flagged as High-Value Target
Much of the concern around "Q-day," the hypothetical moment when quantum computers can break standard public-key cryptography, has centered on Satoshi Nakamoto's dormant Bitcoin (BTC) holdings, valued at roughly $63 billion. Smith said those wallets may not be the first priority for a sophisticated attacker. Military systems and state secrets could come first, he argued, while crypto-focused attackers might aim at something more financially damaging.
"If I'm focusing on blockchain, what's the single most valuable key? It's probably Tether's minting key," Smith said. He described a scenario where an attacker mints tokens from an administrative wallet and dumps them on the market before the issuer can respond. Smith also suggested that an attacker could frame the theft as an ordinary key loss, giving them a "plausible, deniable" cover story.
Sean Cheetham, a security researcher at Blockchain Capital, said exchange hot wallets are a more likely early target. Hitting those, he said, would avoid "ringing alarm bells" in the way that stealing Satoshi's coins would.
