Trump Keeps Door Open to New U.S. Bitcoin Purchases as Reserve Strategy Takes Shape

U.S. President Donald Trump has not ruled out the possibility of buying further Bitcoin, reiterating that his administration had discussed the possibility of buying more BTC▲$62,630.00 and other cryptocurrencies but had not made a final decision. 

Trump made the comments during a White House discussion with the technology executives and top regulators in attendance on August 19.

United States President Donald Trump was asked if his administration would be acquiring large Bitcoin or cryptocurrency amounts, to which he said the administration had talked about it, he could listen to recommendation from SEC Chair Paul Atkins, but announced no acquisition of crypto by or funding of government acquisition.

The comments would not have changed the US policy on accumulation, and further Bitcoin accumulation would be subject to the legal framework of Trump’s March 6, 2025 executive order creating the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

Bitcoin reserve will be initially funded with BTC that has been finally forfeited by a criminal or civil judgment. Bitcoin held in the reserve will not be sold and will be considered a reserve asset.

The order said Treasury and Commerce secretaries could develop mechanisms through which the government could acquire additional Bitcoin, provided the cost is offset by reductions elsewhere, and there is no cost to US taxpayers. There has been no follow-up executive action or Treasury acquisition notice to Trump’s comments.
