UK Regulator Opens New Crypto Licence Regime 30 Sept.

The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is introducing a new crypto authorization gateway that will open for applications on 30 September 2026.

The gateway is the entry point to a full FCA licensing regime covering stablecoins, exchanges, custody, staking and other crypto services from October 2027.

According to UK-focused coverage, the FCA will open its new crypto authorization gateway on 30 September 2026, with applications accepted until 28 February 2027.

The underlying regime is scheduled to take effect on 25 October 2027 and will cover stablecoin issuance, trading platforms, custody, dealing, arranging deals and staking services, as summarized in a detailed community report on the UK framework.

Existing anti-money-laundering registration with the FCA will not automatically convert into full authorization, so currently registered firms will still need to pass the new gateway if they want to operate under the 2027 rules.

UK-facing crypto businesses now have a clear calendar for when to apply, what activities will be regulated, and by when they must meet full licensing standards.

For firms, the gateway is a formal route to being fully authorized in the UK, which is often a prerequisite for deeper institutional partnerships, listings and marketing to mainstream customers.
