Crypto liquidity looks simple from the outside: tight spreads, visible depth, and prices that stay aligned across venues. Producing that experience consistently is a sophisticated engineering achievement. Behind the order book sits a distributed system that has to synchronize data, manage risk, and coordinate capital across markets operating independently and around the clock.

Professional market making is best understood as a distributed, real-time control system operating across exchanges that were never designed as one coherent network. Every venue has its own matching engine, message format, rate limits, clock behavior, and failure modes. Prices move continuously, inventory changes with every fill, and quoting decisions have to be made while the system’s view of the market is already aging.

The difficult question is therefore not simply how fast an algorithm can place an order. It is whether dozens of independent systems can maintain a sufficiently accurate shared state, allocate risk and recover from bad data quickly enough to keep the market tradable.

State consistency is the foundation

To quote safely, a market maker needs a local representation of each venue’s order book. That sounds simple until a feed drops a message, delivers updates out of order, reconnects after a network interruption, or publishes an incremental update before the client has finished rebuilding its snapshot.
