Agawam, Massachusetts bans crypto ATMs, pauses data centers

City councilors in Agawam, Massachusetts have voted unanimously to ban cryptocurrency ATMs and have paused data center construction, according to a report by The Reminder.

The ban requires local businesses to remove Agawam's eight crypto ATMs within 90 days. Councilors cited scams as the motivation behind this ban. It joins several localities and states in the US that have banned crypto ATMs.

Councilors also approved a temporary hold on data center developments while officials draft a preliminary ordinance this fall. City Council President Anthony Russo told the news outlet that a recent executive order from Gov. Maura Healey grants municipalities authority over data center approvals. An attempt by Councilor Robert Rossi to permanently ban facilities larger than 12 megawatts failed due to procedural rules prohibiting combined moratoriums and bans.
